β-Catenin

A protein that is a subunit of the cadherin protein complex and is involved in the Wnt signalling pathway.

BMP

Stands for Bone Morphogenic Protein and are growth factors and cytokines that cause the formation of bone and cartilage.

Chordin

A protein that dorsalizes the embryo and binds to TGF-β family proteins such as BMP.

Ectoderm

This tissue emerges first out of the 3 germ layers and differentiates into the nervous system and epidermis.

Endoderm

This tissue forms one of the 3 germ layers and differentiates into the epithelial lining of the gut as well as endocrine glands and organs such as the liver and the pancreas. It also forms the respiratory tract.

Ephrins

Bind to Eph receptors named after Erythropoietin hepatocellular carcinoma cell line from which their cDNA was obtained.

FGFs

Fibroblast Growth Factors that are a family of growth factors important in differentiation and proliferation.

Filopodia

Cytoplasmic projections containing actin filaments.

Gastrulation

The positioning of the 3 germ layers by changes in embryo morphology due to strong movements of the tissue.

Genome

This is the whole of an organisms encoded DNA or RNA; its hereditary information.
